Abstract

Here is a large-format (9½ x 11½) book with 105 of La Fontaine's fables. Almost every fable has a colored illustration derived from Jean-Baptiste Oudry. One of the few fables I have found that is not illustrated is Against Those with Difficult Taste on 16. The illustrations are about a quarter-page in size, just wide enough to fit half of one of the double-columns here. The illustrations are unfortunately not well inked. They give the sort of garish impression I still associate with transfers seventy years after transfers probably ceased to exist. The illustrations follow Oudry's patterns quite closely. This fact makes their attribution to un anonyme du XVIIème siècle more than questionable. The book is sturdy, and its cover presents a melange of various images.
