It pays to pick up the curiosities that bookdealers put on their counters. I wondered if this 1864 magazine might have a fable, and it does. The magazine, I am told, is the kind of thing that paperboys gave or sold to their customers. The first piece is a picture of Jesus with a poem, Suffer the Little Children. Next up is a chapter of the serial Go-Ahead and the Flying Dutchman. Page 143 presents The Cock and the Fox with a nearly circular black-and-white illustration. A key line in this telling is Old chanticleer no sooner saw him depart, than he crowed abundantly in the triumph of his artifice…. The moral is To retort the artifice employed against us is an allowable part of self-defense in time of war. This magazine is in fragile condition after 150 years, but the family illustrations on its cover are still lively! There are of course intriguing advertisements at the back of the magazine.
