Abstract

en_US There are three books of Lessing's fables here, containing 29, 30, and 30 fables, respectively. Storr's introduction says that Lessing's attention was first called to fables by Gellert's work in 1746, closely modeled on La Fontaine's. He wrote in this vein himself -- with lively railings at the fair sex and hits at contemporary follies (xi). His subsequent study of the history and theory of fable led him to discard his former model as a perversion of later times, and the present volume is the outcome of his riper views. I am delighted to have a commentary on Lessing's fables. I tried the first eleven in Book 1, and they include some fine pieces, unfortunately in Gothic script. Some of my favorite fables overall are in this section, like Aesop and the Ass, The Oak and the Pig, The Spirit of Solomon, and The Ass and the Wolf. There are very brief notes at the back and then a large vocabulary.
