Abstract

This is a large format book typical of René Touret editions, 9½" x 12¼", with a cover of DW strong in orange and brown coloring. Inside there are texts with wide margins and four colored pages with blank versoes: WC; "Schoolmaster and Drowning Pupil"; "Cook and Swan"; and DW. The cover illustration may be confusing. Is that dog carrying a bag? Before the trip to Paris, I had noticed this book as being offered by L'Isle Enchantée, but I was not sure that I would get to see Françoise this trip. When I noticed this copy of the same publication at one of the buchinists, I snapped it up. It presents me with the usual questions. Who might have been the artist here? Is this post WWII or pre-war? There are clues on the back cover: "32 pages No 711" and "Héliogravure Sadag, Bellegarde" and "Editions René Touret Paris - La Chatre." Like other such large pamphlets, the internal title is "Recueil des Fables de La Fontaine" while the cover has "Fables Choisies de La Fontaine.
