Here is a curious little book. It contains some 31 short prose chapters, many in the original presentation of German on the left-hand page and French on the right. For some 15 of these chapters, there is an exquisite hand-worked full-page copperplate illustration. Perhaps two of the best of these are facing 16 and 88. The painting work is exquisite! The seller wondered whether the original total of illustrations was 17. The fables are not particularly from Aesop or La Fontaine. The fable at 16 is OR, presented much as a student of Aesop or La Fontaine would present it. This is one of the books whose art I would love to keep coming back to. Unfortunately the title-page is missing. The seller was confident in establishing the author and publisher of the book. 4¼" x 5⅜".
