Abstract

This booklet of 16 pages presented a challenge for me. Its Ebay listing included "Imagerie Pellerin Épinal," but I could not find a match for the booklet or any of its illustrations online. After some time it dawned on me that this is perhaps not the work of Pellerin of Épinal but of a competitor creating publications like theirs. The illustrations, usually partially and vividly colored, include: WL; "Cook and Swan"; "Monkey and Leopard"; "Oyster and Litigants"; "Father and Children (and field)"; LM; FG; and FC. The anthropomorphisation of the animals is at its strongest when the lion in LM has a black head and pink naked flesh. Is the wolf in WL pictured as a butcher? The pages are rather dirty. Here is an ephemeral piece saved from the trash!
