Abstract

To my best recollection, someone gave me this book. It seems to come from a series of La Fontaine's works. This sturdy little (about 4½" x 7") book contains two volumes including all twelve books of La Fontaine's fables. There are printer's designs along the way, apparently unrelated to the fables. The book's provenance is curious. It was sold by A. Imer's bookshop in Lausanne and was owned by a person who signed the title-page, presumably closer to its publication date of 1876. Later it was owned by Rachael Rhys in Birmingham. The book is unusual for a mass production book in that it proclaims its date of printing near the close of the book: April 10, 1876. A few diverse poems are included after Book XII and before the AI of the second volume before that date proclamation.
