Abstract

Here is our first book in Bantu! Mahorais is one of the two languages spoken on Mayotte Island, French territory off of West Africa. The book offers forty fables, with French on the left-hand pages and Mahorais on the right. The illustrations are charcoal sketches, often one with each version of a fable, with good contrast between two scenes. WL, for example, looks first at the two and then just at the lamb in a mirror reverse (34-37). Among the best of the illustrations are OF (16); "Horse and Ass" (26); WL (34 and 37); "Drunk and His Wife" (49-50); and FG (84).
