Abstract

This book is like another in the collection in that both claim on their title-page to have "Gravures de Paul Avril." Both are about the same size: 3½" x 5" x 1". Both have the curious comment right after the title "Texte Collationné d'après les Meilleures Éditions." Here is the big difference: that other volume in fact has only two Avril gravures. But this copy has none! As I learned in researching that other copy, French Wikipedia reveals that the pen name of Paul Avril was adopted by Édouard-Henri Avril, who died in 1928 and was known for his erotic paintings. I wonder what happened here! 460 pages. The only copy I can find on the web seems to have the two images found not in this copy but in the Arnould copy. The seller there guesses a date between 1880 and 1900.
