Abstract

Here is a surprise. I did not recognize this version of "Reineke Fuchs" with the old German script on its cover and spine. I came across it on an afternoon of book hunting with Fritz-Heiner Mutschler in Dresden. As I reviewed it later, something struck me about the illustrator. When I got back home, I found that we indeed have a different publication with almost the same illustrations, namely " Reineke Fuchs: Neue, freie Bearbeitung für das deutsche Haus" by Anton Hoffmanns Verlag, perhaps published in 1910. In fact, the two books even have the same printer, Steinkopf in Stuttgart. The difference is, of course, in the texts of Reineke that the two books offer. I wrote "almost" above because the Hoffmann version includes eight of Wagner's illustrations in color. The black-and-white illustrations here are of various sizes. I have the impression that they are not far from von Kaulbach's interpretations of the various scenes. 5½" x 7½". 125 pages.
