Abstract

Here is a fascinating addition to the collection! The cover seems to supply this information: "Russian Primer for Learning Letter and Reading Russian and Church-Slavic" and adds "By new spelling and from new illustrations." It is published by "Galician Bazar" in New York. So we already have reference to Galicia, a territory in Spain, Russia, and the USA. If we check the back cover, we find this stamp: "Printed in Germany." Wow! As I tried to learn more about it, I found a copy advertised on the web, reprinted in 1964 for $58. For somebody, it was valuable! Inside one finds, after Russian alphabet learning and short poems, many fables between about 33 and 53, several of them illustrated, like LM (33); CP (46); "Monkey and Spectacles" (46); as well as "The Lion and Dog" from Tolstoy (49). Many of these texts are marked "Basni." The last surprise about this pamphlet is that I cannot establish whether I got it from Ivo Dimov through Ebay or I found it at Black Swan in Oakland.
