Abstract

A "lardon" is a piece of diced bacon. "Croquer" means to munch. Two things captivated me about this oversized book with boards for covers and canvas spine as soon as I noticed it. The first is the delightful execution of the illustrations, especially those that are colored. These show the mice doing all sorts of human things. The second is the name of the artist Jean de la Fontaine. He must be playing on the Jean de La Fontaine that is the creator of France's popular animal fables. The book's seven chapters are listed in the T of C on 43. Black-and-white and colored illustrations are mixed along the way in various sizes. By Chapter II we have playing of music and reading of books by candle light. On 14 we get one of the first colored illustrations, apparently a mouse sailor or pirate. Chapter IV has them changing residence, while Chapter V is at table. Page 31 is another full colored page showing the preparations for a mouse banquet on the floor. Do not miss the engaging mouse character bowing on the back cover.
