Abstract

I have often searched German "Fibel" books hoping that there were some fables in them. Generally, the answer has been "No." Now here is a book that treats every letter as though it contains a fable. Sometimes, even though there is a moral, there is not really a fable, as when "G" gets us into the legend of the geese that saved Rome. There are, however, some clear and well-known fables that appear here. Among them are "Lion and Fox"; "Lion and Mosquito"; OF; FC; and WL. The color work, already brilliant on the front cover, is well sustained in the book. A good example is the first illustration of OF under "O." Was Eugen Ledebur so well known that they never acknowledge his full name in this book?
