Abstract

en_US Here is a new version, one year later than a version already in the collection. That version had, on 44-64, "The Battle of the Frogs and Mice" with illustrations. This version has instead, on 44-48, various reflections, several by Scott. Its cover has changed the printer's designs around the basic title and image. It has either dropped or is missing i-iv, with the title-page, advertisement, and introduction. It thus begins on 5. It has a serious cut in the lower right corner from front to back cover. The cover changes two other things. First, instead of "Published for the Proprietors," we now read "Published by the Halford Sauce Co." And an open space printed with "Compliments of the Halford Sauce Company" now is blank. The pamphlet is slightly taller and narrower now. What a difference a year makes! Let me repeat comments made on the earlier version. A booklet like this shows one of the main reasons why I work on this collection. Aesop shows up in the strangest places! The edition pointed to is not listed in Bodemann 1998, but seems to be in the family represented there under #65; it includes editions in 1626, 1649, 1653, 1672. Pages 5 through 43 are given to a fable each (except for "Mercury and the Woodchoppers," which occupies 42-43), with a single cut and an explicit separate moral for each fable. Thus there is a total of thirty-eight fables. The cover image of Aesop with a ring of animals dancing around him is classic. I cannot find the texts in my text-bank. Several infrequent fables show up here, e.g. "The Fisherman" (5), "The Dog and the Meat-Cook" (12), and "The Sick Raven" (22). The lions' faces are unsuccessful, e.g. on 20 and 21. The advertisement on the inside of the back cover proclaims "Halford Leicestershire Table Sauce. The Most Perfect Relish of the Day. An absolute Remedy for Dyspepsia. Invaluable to all Good Cooks. A Nutritious Combination for Children. Invaluable for Soups, Hashes, Cold Meats, and Entr├®es." Wow!
