Abstract

"An X". An unusual feature of this small but thick book -- 3" x 5½", 207 + 221 pages -- is the 250 illustrations. After the frontispiece showing La Fontaine and FC, they are two to a page, unpaginated, and with blank obverse. I find them unusually detailed. There is only a fragment of what seems a list of illustrations left at the back of the second volume. The frontispiece is signed "JB Compagnie sculpt", but I cannot find another acknowledgement of the illustrator. Since there is an illustration for every fable, they occur quite regularly. They seem to be on heavier paper stock than the text pages. Oudry is a strong influence in the design of these illustrations. Good examples of the illustrator's work are "Les Deux Mulets" (25) and 2W (41). The spine is severely damaged. Not in Bodemann who lists two editions by Batilliot (not Batilliot fils) twenty years earlier. This book seems to be exceedingly rare. I can find one copy that was on auction, and I find one quick reference in an article on German editions.
