Abstract

Here is a set of 63 La Fontaine fables with full and half-page illustrations by Jean Raffin and various smaller illustrations by a variety of artists including Mabel F. Taylor. The unsigned colored illustration on the cover depicts a mother reading to a young child in an outdoor setting. Among the best of Raffin's work may be "The Miser Who Lost His Treasure" (33) and FK (38). "The Wolf, the Mother, and the Child" (62) sets the scene inside a compound rather than behind a window. BC has almost a village of rats living normal lives a few feet from the cat (77). "The Rat Who Retired from the World" (89) gets into more detail than is usual. "The Banker and the Cobbler" (107) seems to be set in their initial discussion; it is a good study of the two characters. Maniy of the endpieces have no connection with their fable. They are more concerned with children, like those sleeping on 42 or the child in a carriage drawn by birds on 44. T of C at the end. Not in Bodemann
