"Avec le sens moral en quatre vers, et les quatrains de Benserade. Édition ornee de cinquante trois gravures en taille-douce." This lovely landscape-formatted volume presents a new approach to reworking Barlow after a surprising outpouring of effort recorded by Bodemann #187. That earlier effort had produced five Aesop volumes in our collection in short succession (Gueffler 1800 and 1801; Debray-LeGrand 1801; Genets Jeune 1805; Denesle 1810). Those follow Barlow better and more vivaciously than does Lefevre here, though Lefebre's following of Barlow is clear. This volume has 53 illustrations for some 67 fables, beginning with a frontispiece of the astrologer about to fall into a pit. Among the best illustrations is WSC facing 25. Quite different from Barlow is "The Swallow and the Birds" (16). There seem to be several fables presented here that are not in Barlow. Bodemann is correct: this artistry is well typified as "Barlow stretched to meet a different format." Bodemann #232. Very good condition. 128 pages. 7½" x 5".
