Abstract

Here is an extra copy of this book. I have already come into contact with Dedieu's excellent work, and have just ordered several of his books in French and German. Here is the German translation of his book by Seuil in 2009: "Le Cerf se Voyant dans l'Eau et Autres Fables." The pop-ups are again exquisite. Dedieu's special gift is to create depth by getting four or five layers into the pop-up picture. Among his best efforts is the title pop-up, which plays with reflection and dimensionality. The background of DW suggests a net. That suggestion is perfect for this fable about confinement and freedom. Another great use of dimensionality occurs in "The Rabbits and the Frogs," as the frogs leaping into the water become the backdrop for our viewing of the rabbit. In each case, the fable text is presented on the left and the right of the central pop-up picture. Exquisite work! The book has a solid feel often lacking in pop-up books.
