Abstract

Here is a paperbound version of two hardbound books already in the collection. What were endpapers in one and became interior pages in the other are here pages 2 and 3, following the same "stack of books" as in that copy with the interior pages rather than endpapers. Also the same as that copy is the final set of pages: the same two-page spread as in the beginning, followed by a geometric floral design. As I wrote of those two hardbound copies, this oversized (8½" x 12") paperbound book of some 32 pages seems to be a slightly smaller-format Hebrew version of Hachette's book first published in 1953, with reprintings in various series in our collection in 1966, 1969, 1970, 1973, and 1983. There are eleven fables in all, each allotted one to three pages. At least five of them are included somehow in those repeated double-pages at both ends of the book. The stories include GA, FC, FG, LM, TMCM, TH, MM, "The Fox and the Goat," WL, FS, and TT. As in the two hardbound copies, the back cover presents twelve tiles with individual characters from these fables. The front cover again has a lively fox tipping his hat.
