Abstract

I would imagine that books printed in 1944 are rather rare! This 48-page book offers generally a fable each page, though it sometimes combines two on one page or takes two pages for a single fable. Each fable is illustrated with a variety of duochrome illustrations above, below, and around the prose texts. The six endpaper illustrations of animals reading fable books already give a sense of the fun that this book has with La Fontaine. The very first set of illustrations, for "The Two Bulls and the Frog," has one frog pointing a finger at the battling bulls while another frog looks on. The illustrations combine black with either green or brown. Readers will not want to miss the illustrations for GA or FC. MSA is well presented through four scenes near the middle of the unpaginated book. A few pages later, a dung beetle seems quite strong in pushing eggs out of the eagle's nest! A tour de force late in the book is the two-page presentation of "The Lark and Her Young." The block of pages splits at about the halfway point. Strings hold on inside the canvas spine. The back cover has a mouse with spectacles reading a Maucci book. There is fun to be had here!
