Abstract

Here is a book of 215 pages offering stories, perhaps in Yiddish? The stories are not those normally associated with Aesop. I suspected that they are Yiddish because Google-Translate renders most of them into German when I am asking for English. I have been fortunate to find the following information about another, higher-quality copy of the book on the web. It was also published in 1912 and it confirms the language of the book. "In Yiddish. (2), iv, 215, (1) pages. Yehoash (Solomon Bloomgarden) was a Yiddish-language poet, scholar and Bible translator. His output included verse, translations, poetry, short stories, essays and fables in Yiddish and some articles in English. His poetry was translated into Russian, Dutch, Polish, Finnish, German." The "iv" indicated in the pagination count refers to a beginning T of C. One of the few fables following, as far as I can tell, a traditional Aesop fable is "Der Man mit de zwei Weiber" (37), reported as a story from the Talmud. Two sample fables are "Der Stein und die Boimer" (109) and "De Malpe on der Fox" (197).
