Abstract

This is a fascinating effort. I bought a print-on-demand copy of the 1776 original because I expected this 1891 paperbound edition to be fragile and I needed to learn something about "Gascouns." I have learned some more. The original presented the first four books of La Fontaine's fables in the Gascon dialect of French. Gascon is apparently synonymous with "Basque." This 68 page pamphlet has some introductory notes on questions like the authorship, qualities, and defects of that original edition. Then it presents all the fables in two columns without notes or commentary. There is a Gascon-French dictionary on 55-66 and a T of C on the two sides of the back cover. As I wrote of the print-on-demand copy, the dialect is just far enough away from my French that I have trouble making it out. Here's another fable treasure saved from the ephemeral bonfire!
