Francis Markoe (1740–1779)
Born on St. Croix in the Danish West Indies, Francis Markoe was the younger brother of Abraham “Captain” Markoe. He was the 9th child out of ten. He married Elizabeth Hartman, and together they raised a family that would extend the Markoe legacy beyond the Caribbean. Their daughter, Margaret Markoe, later married twice—one of her husbands a grandson of Benjamin Franklin, linking the family to the heart of American history. His eldest son, Peter Markoe, married his second cousin, Mary Heliger. Francis died in 1779. His descendants were closely tied to both Caribbean and early American history.
