History of St. Benedict the Moor Parish
St. Benedict the Moor Parish was founded in the early 1900s by Fr. Francis, S.J. (Sasse 2017). Located in North Omaha, the parish served the segregated Black community. From 1923-1968, St. Benedict's operated a parish school. The parish was considered a segregated mission parish until 1953, when Bishop Bergan changed its status to that of a territorial parish. Despite this, the parishioners are primarily Black to this day.
