James Cox Markoe (1856–1941)
Father of Fr. John Markoe, SJ
The third child of William Markoe and Maria Dorsey Cox, James Cox Markoe was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1850. Raised in a family deeply rooted in both Quaker tradition and civic leadership, James carried on the family legacy of influence and integrity. He married Mary Amelia Prince in 1885, linking the Markoe name to another respected American lineage. They had 9 children together, one being John Prince, SJ. Known for his steady character and quiet leadership, James helped sustain the family's prominence during a time of growth and change in the Upper Midwest.
