John Markoe (1781–1834)
Great-Grandfather of Fr. John Markoe, SJ
The only married son of Captain Abraham Markoe, John Markoe carried forward his family's legacy in early Philadelphia society. Between 1809 and 1811, he commissioned the grand Markoe House on Chestnut Street—an ambitious residence for its time that reflected the family’s status and vision. John married Mehitable Cox, but his untimely death in 1834 left the house's legacy in limbo. Mehitable, widowed and seeking a new life, eventually moved the family westward. From 1835 to 1881, the once-stately home was rented out before falling into disuse. It was demolished in 1881, closing a chapter on one of Philadelphia’s early architectural landmarks.
