Peter Markoe (1702–1747)
Great-great-great-grandfather of Fr. John Markoe, SJ
The earliest known Markoe on record, Peter Markoe laid the foundation for his family legacy in the Caribbean and early America. A French Huguenot by descent, Peter settled on the island of St. Croix which was then under Danish rule, and there he became a successful planter. He married Elizabeth Ferrall, and together they raised ten children. Among them was Abraham Markoe, who would later emigrate to Philadelphia and become a key figure in the American Revolution. Though less is recorded about Peter’s personal life beyond his role as a plantation owner and father, his lineage and legacy were significant, and his descendants helped shape early American military and civic institutions.
