Abstract

Should we blame Patchen's work on Joyce? On drugs? I see here largely a category-smashing linguistic virtuosity. There are lots of lovely word-plays, like moral torportude (23) and eavesdripper (24). One clear reference to Aesop comes in the title The Wolf That Cried Ohboy Ohboy (22). This is demanding reading: is it worth it? It is surprising to me that this book (in the form of the extra copy from Renaissance) was in the Wauwatosa Methodist Church Library.
