Retractors such as the antique example currently on display in this exhibit, are tools used to pull away soft tissue and organs from parts of the body that must be accessed to perform vital surgical procedures on patients. Like the trepan that is also part of this exhibit, current archaeological evidence tells this tool has been used as far back as the Stone Age!
