- Abstract
- en_US Across six chapters, I believe that Lebrun digs into the diverse perspectives which criticism has developed in treating the Fables. In a short preface, Pierre Malandain speaks of "l'avant texte le plus fréquent et le plus copieux de toute notre littérature." After a first chapter looks at the philological tradition and the intertextual and intratextual perspective, Lebrun takes up the question of irony apparently raised by Jean Giraudoux in 1938. A third chapter considers La Fontaine the thinker: moralist, philosopher, political critic? Chapter IV is given to "L'homme et l'oeuvre." Chapter V is on reception of the Fables. Chapter VI seems to offer Lebrun's perspective, based on "le pacte de lecture." I look forward to a chance to dig into this fascinating book!
