What Makes a Book Rare?
Blumberg had a keen eye and understanding of what makes books rare and valuable. He often believed that rare books were in the wrong hands and that only he truly knew how to handle and store such treasures.
But one may ask, what features make a book rare? How do we know where and what to look for in order to determine if a book is rare?
There are many different characteristics that must be considered in order to label a book as “rare.” Some of these include the overall importance of the book, scarcity of original copies of the book, both the age and the imprint of the original copies, and the physical and aesthetic properties of the books, as well as the relative associations the book has with certain individuals, organizations, or important movements.
