Elizabeth Pittman

Elizabeth Pittman is an unsung hero because throughout her life, she worked to break gender and social stereotypes using her perseverance to emerge as one of the first Black American women in the legal field. During a time period of the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement and the second wave of feminism, Elizabeth Pittman stayed determined to never let racism or sexism stop her. In the 1950s, she was one of 39 Black American Women in the United States to become a lawyer (Wirth 2022). She continued to make local impacts in the Omaha community by becoming the first Black American woman to become a Douglas County Municipal judge and the first Black American elected to the Omaha School board (Wirth 2022). Throughout her career, she continued to promote advocacy for women's and Black Americans' rights and inspired many others like her to persevere through the challenges and break the social barriers.
